Illustrations by Cliff Roberts from “The First Book of Jazz” by Langston Hughes – 1955

Mr. Langston Hughes

I just picked up a vintage copy of “The First Book of Jazz” by Langston Hughes (1955). The illustrations by Cliff Roberts are incredible. The style reminds me of one of my favorite jazz album cover artists Jim Flora. I found the illustration set here.

    watch this;

    from the disney rarities dvd.

    my initial comment was going to be critical of disney for ripping off this illustrator, until i noticed the disney cartoon is dated 1953.

    he isn’t listed as a conceptual designer either.

    go figure.
